Celebrating the Power of “Care at Home”
Every November, the National Alliance for Care at Home invites everyone to celebrate the value of receiving care where people feel most comfortable — in their own homes.
This year’s National Care at Home Month theme, “One Voice for Care at Home,” reminds us that caregivers, families, and health professionals can make a difference when we work together.
For many people, receiving care at home isn’t just a preference — it’s a lifeline. It helps them recover after illness, manage long-term conditions, or receive end-of-life support in a place that feels safe and familiar.
What “care at home” means
“Care at home” includes many types of support that bring health services directly to where someone lives. This can be a private home, an apartment, or an assisted living community.
These services include:
- Home health care — Skilled nursing, therapy, and help after an illness, surgery, or hospital stay
- Hospice care—Compassionate support for people and families facing life-limiting illnesses
- Palliative care — Comfort care that helps people feel better while living with serious or chronic illnesses
Each type of care helps people stay at home, where they most want to be.
Why “care at home” matters
More people than ever are choosing home-based care. According to a recent survey, about 75% of U.S. adults ages 50 and older want to stay in their homes as they age.
That desire, along with advances in technology and a growing number of caregivers, is changing how people receive care. A report from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP found that 63 million Americans provided care to a loved one in the past year — almost 50% more than in 2015.
These numbers show what many families already know: Home is often the best place to heal, recover, and find peace.
How “care at home” supports families
Caring for a loved one at home can bring comfort and connection, but it can also be challenging. That’s why care-at-home services also support families, not just patients.
At Traditions Health, our nurses, social workers, therapists, and aides teach families about medications and care plans. They explain what to expect, answer questions, and help manage stress. They also offer emotional and spiritual support when families need it most.
Having care at home gives families peace of mind, knowing their loved one is being cared for with kindness and skill.
