Skilled nurses are vital to health care: They provide specialized care in a wide range of settings, including patients’ homes, care that requires advanced skills beyond basic nursing training. From pain management and symptom control to end-of-life care, skilled nurses meet patients’ complex medical needs while providing compassionate support.
For these reasons and many more, National Skilled Nursing Care Week has been a national observance since 1967.
According to the American Health Care Association® (AHCA), this year’s theme, “Tapestry of Life,” was chosen to highlight the meaningful stories that make up each person’s journey in skilled nursing care. The organization states, “From residents and families to caregivers and staff, everyone adds a unique thread that’s woven into this vibrant tapestry. This theme celebrates the connections, resilience, and strength that unite us all.”
Skilled nursing at Traditions Health
Skilled nurses are an integral part of our care teams, with qualifications and licenses that prepare them to provide the level of care you or your loved one needs and deserves.
Skilled nurses help patients and their loved ones by:
- Administering specialized treatments like intravenous therapy, tube feedings, and wound care
- Aiding patients dealing with loneliness and isolation
- Allowing at-home care for as long as possible
- Helping with the activities of daily living and improving quality of life
- Providing consistency of care that reduces trips to the hospital or doctor’s office
- Reducing stress levels for patients, caregivers, and family members
Not only do skilled nurses provide important medical services like these; they also bring comfort to patients and their families, helping them navigate what’s often a challenging time. That’s why we’re honoring our skilled nurses who work in all levels of home care, including ongoing home health, palliative, and hospice care during this year’s National Skilled Nursing Care Week, May 11-17.
Home health care nurses
Our home health nurses perform services including routine check-ups, wound care, pain management, and symptom control. They work with patients’ caregivers to ensure they meet their needs and provide the best possible in-home care.
Palliative care nurses
Our palliative care nurses provide comfort and improve the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. Rather than focusing on treatment, palliative care nurses concentrate on helping to relieve symptoms, pain, and discomfort.
Hospice nurses
Like palliative care nurses, hospice nurses focus on providing symptom management and emotional support for patients who choose to stop curative treatment for terminal illness. They have specialized training to assess and manage patients’ unique needs — and to bring comfort and support to patients’ families, including teaching them to connect and care for their loved one.
