A DEDICATED LEADER

Bringing a Comprehensive Team Together

At each of our hospice locations, a hospice medical director oversees the care of patients. This physician has the medical training and experience to provide skilled end-of-life care.

You can count on our hospice medical directors to combine compassion with their vast knowledge to ensure we care for you or your loved one with the support and dignity you deserve. They will lead your interdisciplinary team of skilled hospice nurses, medical social workers, spiritual professionals, and other professionals — all working together to provide the best and most appropriate care for every patient, every time.

Because we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, we’ll design a personalized care plan to address every aspect of your care, ensuring we support your emotional, spiritual, physical, and medical needs. The medical director will also meet regularly with your care team to address any changes needed in your care and treatment.

A SKILLED LEADER

Medical Director Responsibilities

The hospice medical director’s role is essential for ensuring hospice patients get the best possible care. Our hospice medical directors are trustworthy experts in end-of-life care during the final months and days of a patient’s life. In addition to their clinical leadership, their advocacy skills ensure each patient remains at the core of the team’s work each day. Leading by example, they prioritize delivery of care in a compassionate, private, appropriate, and respectful manner. Hospice medical directors have a full range of duties, including:

  • Advocating for patients based on their needs and wishes
  • Certifying each patient’s terminal condition
  • Collaborating with referring physicians and medical specialists
  • Communicating with patients and family members
  • Ensuring compliance standards are met
  • Informing patients about pain management and other care options
  • Monitoring the progression of a patient’s illness
  • Leading hospice team members and helping to create comprehensive care plans
  • Ordering patient medical equipment, supplies, and medications
  • Prescribing appropriate medications to assist with symptom management and comfort
